Why become a member of The Church of the Good Shepherd?

So you have visited us a couple of times and like what you have seen. You have checked out our web site and think that we might be okay. Why would you want to join The Church of the Good Shepherd? You can worship here and even take Holy Communion without becoming a member. You can participate in most of what goes on here without joining. So why join? Are there any perks? A better parking place? A seat of my own in the sanctuary?

The most important part of church membership has little do do with such "benefits". The most important part of membership is the commitment you make to the people of The Church of the Good Shepherd. Members make the commitment to be there for each other. Members make the commitment to help each other grow in their love for God and for God's world. Members give of themselves for each other and for the wider work of the church in the world much as Christ gave himself for us.

In our society we tend not to make commitments easily, but in the Church faith we believe we mature spiritually only as we make commitments. This is the most important reason for joining a church.

How can I become a member?

If you have never been baptized, you will prepare for baptism.

If you were baptized as an infant or young child and have not made a profession of faith and been confirmed, then you will prepare to reaffirm your baptism when you take membership vows.

If you are a member of another part of the church (such as Episcopalian, Presbyterian, Lutheran, etc.), then you can transfer your membership from that church to our church.

If you are a member of another Christian church that does not transfer membership, you can make a profession of faith and be received as a member.

Please feel free to contact our pastor about becoming a member of The Church of the Good Shepherd. He will be able to answer your questions and help you discern what next steps to take.
