Adult Study CoursesAt Good Shepherd we have made a commitment to offer Adult Study opportunities every year, fall through spring, in addition to our Adult Sunday School. The scheduled classes cover a variety of topics, of varying lengths, at different times throughout the week, to give the greatest number of people the chance to participate. We hope that you will join us in one or more classes over the coming months.
The 2013/2014 Adult Study courses include (as currently scheduled):
Journey Through The New Testament is currently being offered on Tuesday evenings. This course will run until Easter week 2014. This class is based on a book by Marcus Borg and is being facilitated by Marilyn Bursch and Sue Rothenberger.

Silence and Other Surprising Invitations of Advent by Enuma Okoro
Advent Study to Start Thursday December 5 at 9:30 amInstead of focusing on the usual characters in the Advent Story author Enuma Okoro takes a look at the story of Zechariah and Elizabeth. Silence and Other Surprising Invitations of Advent guides you in reflection on your own experiences of waiting and longing, or the need for community, and of hungering for God. Everyone is welcome and invited to attend. This group meets at 9:30 am -11:30 am for the study and then those who can stay help make and then deliver 100 sandwiches for one of our local homeless shelters. Come be a part of the warm fellowship of this group and take time to nurture your social and spiritual self during this often hectic time of the year.
When: Begins Dec 5 and runs each Thursday morning through the first week of January 2, 2014.

Drop-In Class: Yes, please join as you are able, materials are often ordered weeks ahead so contact Carole Yoho or the church firstname.lastname@example.org office to be sure that we have materials on hand for you.
Persons who participate: All are invited, who want to deepen and nurture their spiritual life and a prayerful presence in thier church community.
Coordinator: Carole Yoho (email@example.com) has led this effort for many years. However, the facilitation of each study is shared among the group membership.
Resource: Silence and Other Surprising Invitations of Advent by Enuma Okoro
Description: This group meets each Thursday morning and will study several short-term books/programs from Septmeber through June each year. They engage in a time of prayer, worship through opening hymn, and then study. They also complete a hands-on mission project each week at 11:30am by making a hundred sandwiches that are delivered to one of our area emergency homeless shelters.
Practicing the Presence - A Time of Quiet Prayer
When: Thursday, 1:00 p.m. and also offered Sunday mornings at 9:00 am in the Gallery.
Where: Adult Room # 7, Education Center
Drop-In Class: Yes, please join as you are able.
Persons who participate: All are invited, who want to deepen and nurture a prayerful presence in a spiritual community.
Facilitator: Joe Matney (703-264-7885; jsmatney @ cox.net) We will be supported by various person who have long experience with this sort of prayer.
Resource: For optional background reading, LIVING IN THE PRESENCE and LIVING SIMPLY THROUGH THE DAY, both books by Tilden Edwards.
Description: This group will provide an opportunity to notice and nurture living in God's presence, and deepen our trust in an availability for that presence. Through a variety of prayer practices, silence, reflection and sharing we will grow in our understanding and appreciation of contemplative living.
