Adult Study Courses
At Good Shepherd we have made a commitment to offer Adult Study opportunities every year, Fall through Spring, in addition to our Adult Sunday School and the Sunday Evening Adult Series. The scheduled classes cover a variety of topics, of varying lengths, at different times throughout the week, to give the greatest number of people the chance to participate. CROSSROADS
A biannual opportunity--both for those who are new to COGS and for those who have been a part of our church family for some time--to come together to study and discuss the history, beliefs, and practices of the United Methodist ChurchOur next Crossroads gatherings will take place Sunday, October 24, 2010 @ 7:00 pm
in the Adult Room #1. This will be a part of a special Sunday Evening Adult "Champions of Faith" presentation that will be given by Rev. Burgess on his recent summer travels through England

DISCIPLE Bible Study I - Becoming Disciples Through Bible Study
When: 7 p.m., Tuesday's, Sept. 21, 2010 - May 24, 2011

Drop-In class: No, registration is suggested; (Minimum registration 4 persons needed).
Description: Disciple Bible Study program is designed to develop local churches through the in-depth study of scripture. Participants are strengthened in their faith and guided into service and ministry. It is a Bible study aimed at transformation not just information. Becoming Disciples through Bible Study is a 34-week class that covers Genesis to Revelation.
DISCIPLE Bible Study III - Remember Who Your Are
When: 7:00 p.m., Tuesday's September 14, 2009 - May 17, 2010

Description: DISCIPLE Bible Study III - Remember who you are is the third installment of a four course series of Bible studies developed to help the participants become familiar with Scripture and interact with the text. This 32-week study selects specific portion of Scripture the Old and New Testaments covering the the Prophets and the letters of the Apostle Paul. Participants will read familiar passages, seeing them in fresh ways and expecting God to speak through them as individuals and as a part of the larger community of faith.
Companions in Christ
A Small-Group Experience in Spiritual Formation
Where: Room # 9 (aka Junior High Room)

Resource: Companions in Christ Participant Guide ($15.00)
Description: CIC is a small-group experience in spiritual formation. We will explore spiritual formation as a journey toward holiness and wholeness, learn ways to meditate on and pray with scripture, and investigate various forms and styles of prayer. The aim of this 28-week course is to help each participant develop and maintain a daily spiritual routine, as well as to prepare them for participation in a short spiritual retreat.
Practicing the Presence - A Time of Quiet Prayer
When: Thursday, 1:00 p.m., and the first Thursday evening of each Month at 7 p.m.
Where: Adult Room # 7, Education Center
Prerequisities: None
Drop-In Class: Yes, please join as you are able.
Persons who participate: All are invited, who want to deepen and nurture a prayerful presence in a spiritual community.
Facilitator: Joe Matney (703-264-7885; jsmatney @ cox.net) We will be supported by various person who have long experience with this sort of prayer.
Resource: For optional background reading, LIVING IN THE PRESENCE and LIVING SIMPLY THROUGH THE DAY, both books by Tilden Edwards.
Description: This group will provide an opportunity to notice and nurture living in God's presence, and deepen our trust in an availability for that presence. Through a variety of prayer practices, silence, reflection and sharing we will grow in our understanding and appreciation of contemplative living.
Letters of Apostle Paul
When: Tuesdays, 7:00-9:00 p.m.; seven consecutive weeks 22 February 2011 to 29 March 2011 (two planned SNOW DAY if needed would push schedule until Tuesday April 12).

Description:
Persons who participate: Open to those who desire to understand Biblical texts, are open to views of others, and are willing to encourage others to share different views and perspectives than one's own. Open to those wanting to grow in Christian faith, examine the life God calls us to live, and discern origins of the "good news" that God loves us in the New Testament.
