Food For Others
Since it's inception in 1995, Food for Others has been dedicated to assuring a food source for Northern Virginia's needy. Operating out of a Merrifield, VA warehouse, emergency food requests are filled for individuals and families, as well as bulk food orders for about 50 other organizations equally dedicated to feeding the hungry. In addition, Food for Others volunteers provide the unique ministry of distributing groceries and sandwiches on week nights at 15 different outdoor sites around the Northern Virginia area. Volunteers also pick up donated food from grocery stores on a regular basis, sponsor food drives, and glean fields for surplus produce for distribution to the needy. Church of the Good Shepherd was one of 20 churches supporting the creation of this volunteer community-based organization.
How we participate:
1. Financial support
2. Volunteers work at a distribution site each week
3. Meals donated at Thanksgiving
4. We participate in the Food for Others' Power Pack Program. Each week we deliver meals to children at Flint Hill Elementary School Children who receive a free/reduced lunch are eligible for the program, and they can take home a bag every Friday for the weekend. Good Shepherd bags enough to last one month at our potluck following the 11 a.m. worship service every third Sunday of the month.
"Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you;
or thirsty and give you drink?" (Matthew 25:37)
