Sunday Coffee

The Fellowship Committee hosts a time for the congregation to greet guests, newcomers and old friends after each Sunday worship by serving coffee, juice, and cookies. On special occasions we may have bagels or donuts. Helping to serve is shared by all, and it is a great way to meet other members.

There is no better way to fellowship than a cup of coffee for the adults and juice and cookies for the children!

Monthly Potluck

A Potluck Lunch is served on the second Sunday of each month, after the 11:00 a.m. Worship Service. This is a wonderful time to gather for great food and fellowship. Monthly themes add to our enjoyment. Occasionally, we will vary the monthly schedule to include a brunch between services, giving our two congregations an opportunity to visit with one another.

Men's Monthly Breakfast

The men of the Church of The Good Shepherd meet on the first Saturday of every month at 7:30 a.m. for breakfast at the Bob Evans restaurant in Oakton. There is no formal agenda for the meeting, just fellowship. The meal is usually finished by 8:30 a.m., which leaves plenty of time for the Saturday "honey do" lists.

All men of the Church are invited.

Dine for Nine

The concept of the Dine for Nine groups began years ago at The Church of the Good Shepherd. Established by the Fellowship Committee, the purpose of Dine for Nine was for small groups of church members to become better acquainted while breaking bread together. The groups are for adults only and are composed of singles or couples.

Those interested are divided into groups of six to twelve. (Dine for Six groups were originally formed but over the years the concept has become so popular they are now Dine for Nine). Groups are formed by various means, with a "lead person/couple" designated for each group. This person/couple decides the first month's activity. At the first group dinner a new group "leader is established who decides what the next month's event will be. The groups are changed every four months and the methods used to form the groups is sometimes obvious and sometimes not so obvious.

Usually the monthly event would include a dinner, but could be anything. The dinners are held either in restaurants, pot luck at someone's home, or progressive pot luck at several homes. There is no end to the possibilities that are open to each group during the year. Dine for Nine groups have enjoyed biking and other sporting activities, Wolf Trap lawn picnics, country dancing, etc., etc. With the number of theaters, cultural events and ethnic restaurants that are available in the Washington area people can be involved in the Dine for Nine for years and not partake in the same event more than once.

Pancake Supper

The Church of the Good Shepherd hosts an Annual Lenten Pancake Supper. Traditionally, the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday was the day Christians, having made confession or "shrived" themselves, would receive absolution and penance for their sins. Since Shrove Tuesday was the last day before the 40 day fast of Lent, precious commodities such as eggs, honey, fat and other rich foods had to be used up. These foods were cooked together to make a pancake, the traditional Shrove Tuesday meal.

Our Pancake Supper is held each year on Shrove Tuesday and is served continuously from 5:30 - 6:30 p.m. There are activities for the children, scripture verses for Lenten prayer exchanges, and singing for everyone. Cost for the dinner is minimal to cover expenses. Come join us as we begin the Lenten Season and celebrate Shrove Tuesday!

Soup, Song and Story during Lent

"See you Wednesday for soup!" -- an often heard remark at Good Shepherd during the Season of Lent (just prior to Easter).

For us, part of making the six weeks of Lent a season of deeper devotion and commitment is the JOY of gathering on Wednesday evenings for a light meal of soup and bread, of listening to a story-teller whose tale stimulates our faith, and of singing some of our favorite songs. The soup menu always demonstrates plentiful choices of delicious, home-made, old-favorites, and "never-heard-of-that-one-but-it-smells-good!"

Church Annual Picnic

The church organizes an Annual Picnic, which is actually a pot luck that has moved outdoors to a local park. The picnic features some great food. The park features a lot of room for family activities including: pedal boats, a carousel, a mini water park, and a large swimming pool.
