Exactly five years after starting, the last worship service was held at Flint Hill Elementary School. The first phase of construction on the 7-acre parcel was an adaptable multi-use facility, approximately 7,500 square feet, consisting of a worship/fellowship space, classrooms, kitchen and two offices. This first phase was used for the first time on October 1, 1972. The church membership at the end of 1972 was 265 youth and adults.
It was not long before additional Sunday School space was needed. The second-phase building was designed to respond to this need. Early in the fall of 1986, the 4,400-square-foot addition of eight classrooms and a large gathering/resource area were consecrated and put into full use. It also was during the mid-80's that the church began to add more professional staff in the areas of education and program development, as well as music and administrative management. At the end of 1986, with the new education wing in place, the membership had grown to 494 youth and adults.
The most recent building project grew out of a Task Force
recommendation in 1993. After compiling and evaluating our
short-term and long-term special needs, the Task Force recommended
that a Building Committee be established to collate an initial
scope of work and present building options to the congregation.
After a series of congregational meetings, the congregation
voted in June of 1993 demonstrating support for both an
education area addition, as well as a new sanctuary. A three-year
capital funds campaign was conducted in the Fall of '93,
using a staff person from our denominational office, pledging
more than $500,000 to the Building Fund over the years 1994-1997.
(In 1998 an additional $530,000 pledged for the years 1999-2001
to reduce the outstanding building debt.) A design contract
was awarded after the congregation had conducted a design
competition among four firms. The new construction was begun
in the fall of 1996 and completed in October 1997. During
our 30th anniversary in 1997, we celebrated the consecration
of our new Sanctuary and Education Center with special Services
on November 9th. Our Sanctuary seats 400, and there are
11 new large classrooms to accommodate our growing Sunday
School attendance. At the end of 2001, the membership of
the church was approximately 620 youth and adults.
Our "Mission Statement" demonstrates that we are committed to community outreach, and this church has become "known" in this area for many programmatic thrusts which help others. Our building is used by many community groups, a Korean Baptist Church, several scouting groups, Alcoholics Anonymous, support groups, Vienna Women's Center, private music teachers (recitals) and others. The demand for building use is far greater than our availability and space will meet. We look forward with great anticipation to the third major phase of our site development, as it unlocks more growth and more opportunities for service to our community. |
