Let Go and Let God

TODAY: Ponder this written by Reinhold Niebuhr. “Nothing that is worth doing can be achieved in our lifetime; therefore we must be saved by hope. Nothing which is true and beautiful or good makes complete sense in any immediate context of history; therefore, we must be saved by faith. Nothing we do, however virtuous, can be accomplished alone; therefore we are saved by love. No virtuous act is quite as virtuous from the standpoint of our friend or foe as it is from our standpoint; therefore we must be saved by the final form of love which is forgiveness.”

I was asked to write something for the Lenten devotional booklet. I want to explain why I chose the scripture above. Two years ago I was 26, a single mother of three children living in poverty and a high school dropout. I had a job paying barely enough to cover the bills. At times I broke our furniture apart to go into the wood stove to keep my children warm. The only time we managed to eat was by food closets in the area and churches donating food to us.

I begged and pleaded with God to change my life. When the social services wanted to take my children because of the poor condition of the house we lived in, God sent me an army of angels from Oakton and Vienna, Va., to repair our home. When I had no car, and I was walking five miles a day to work, God sent me a 1991 Toyota van through a donation from a very kind-hearted church member. When I lost our home, those same angels found me a new home.

I have always struggled with my faith in God, but every time I have convinced myself to “let go and let God,” I have found myself dumbstruck with the sequence of miracles He performs on my behalf. I can’t begin to tell you how overwhelmed I have been to know that God has done these things for me because He loves me. (1 Peter 5: 6-9)
I don’t know you or your amount of suffering, but God does and He loves you, so “let go and let God” and be amazed at the glory He holds.
