WHERE AM I HEADED?

TODAY: Keep a journal during Lent this year. Maybe it’s a lesson of the day, a special moment that comes to mind that you capture in a word, in a sentence or a letter to yourself.

Have you ever been driving down the road automatically, listening to the radio or letting your mind wander, only to discover as you reached a corner, “Oh, no! I’m not going to work. I’m going to ____________” (fill in the blank). We all have. We get used to getting in the car, heading to our usual destination, putting the car on autopilot and starting off. Somewhere we realize we’re not heading where we want to go. Habit has taken over.

Lent is like that corner where you realize you’re not heading in the right direction. Your life has been buzzing along, taking its ordinary path. Suddenly it’s Lent. It’s time to stop, think about where you’re heading, and decide if that is where you really want to go. Is your life taking the direction you really want it to, or are you like the driver who’s driving by habit?

I’ve decided that it’s time for me to stop, pay attention and see where I’m headed in my life. I have the next six weeks to take stock. Where am I headed spiritually? Do I need to put God in control of my life? Do I need to listen more? Do I need to learn more about God’s word? Do I need to be more responsive in my dealings with others? Do I need to serve more?

The list goes on and on, but now I’ve been reminded to think. I probably won’t figure out all the answers, but at least I can put on the brakes and give it a try. God is waiting to help me. All I have to do is take time and notice Him. He’s waiting for us at the corner.
